2016-17 Term 3 - Curriculum Newsletter

Dear Parents,

The following information outlines Year 5’s topics for Term 3:          

Maths

This term we will be looking at statistics, focussing on how to answer questions by using data presented in a variety of ways. We will move onto problem solving using negative numbers and all 4 operations, building confidence to work with larger numbers before moving back to deepen our understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages.

English

This term we will be using the novel ‘Stormbreaker’ by Anthony Horowitz to inspire our writing. We will be exploring characterisation and settings within an adventure narrative, as well as exploring similarities and differences between written and filmed texts. We will also be producing non-fiction writing linked to our Science topic on Space.    

Topic

The children will be developing their knowledge of world maps this term and will be focusing on North America. We shall be naming the countries of North America, exploring its climate and features, as well as investigating the different time zones.  

Science

The children will continue their Science studies with Mrs Fidge this term looking at Space.

Religious Education

This term we will be looking at special Islamic celebrations, such as birth rites and weddings, and comparing these to Christian celebrations.  

Other Subjects

Mr Booker will continue to lead our PE sessions on a Monday. Mrs Wilmott will continue our Music sessions on a Wednesday and Mrs Fidge will be teaching Art on a Thursday.

Homework

Maths and English homework will continue to be set on alternate weeks on a Friday – please make sure that it is handed in by Wednesday at the very latest.

 2016-17 Term 2 - Curriculum Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

The following information outlines Year 5’s topics for Term 2:     

Maths

 Key areas of focus will continue to be the development of conceptual understanding alongside procedural fluency and times tables this term. Our tables aim will is to increase accuracy and then build speed of recall.  In problem solving activities we will be building resilience to try and work out what maths we are being asked to do and also thinking about a systematic approach to trial and adjust.

We will continue our learning about multiplication and division and then apply this to fractions and decimals.         

English

This term we will be looking at the text, ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’, and developing our written skills inspired by this story. Our focus will be using commas and brackets accurately in our writing. We will be working on various reading tasks to develop our comprehension skills.

Topic

We will continue to be learning about The Ancient Greeks this term, in particular Greek theatre and the Greek alphabet.

Science

Mrs Fidge will continue exploring Forces with Class 5 this term.  

Religious Education

This term we will be looking at special Jewish celebrations, such as birth rites and weddings, and comparing these to Christian celebrations.  

Other Subjects

Mr Booker will continue to lead our PE sessions on a Monday and we have swimming on a Wednesday this term. Mrs Wilmott will continue our Music sessions on a Thursday.

Homework

2016-17 Term 1 Curriculum Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to another school year! The following information outlines Year 5’s topic for Term 1:

Maths

The children will be starting this year by looking at Place Value in Maths. Standard methods for all four operations will be developed across the year.  

English

This term we will be studying Greek myths from the book Odysseus in conjunction with our Ancient Greece topic. We will be looking at how to use punctuation to develop our writing in Key Skills, including using brackets to add information. Mrs Fidge will be working with the class on developing reading comprehension skills.

Topic

We are learning about the Ancient Greeks this term. We will be finding out about their daily lives and culture and seeing the impact they have had on today’s society.

Science

Mrs Fidge will be exploring Animals including Humans with the class this term.

Religious Education

We will be looking at special Christian celebrations and journeys in class. We will be working closely with St. Mary’s church and spending time there learning about the building and prayer.

Other Subjects

We will be completing our PE sessions with Mr Booker this term – please ensure that PE kits are in school at all times.

Homework

Maths and English homework will continue to be set on alternate weeks on a Friday – please make sure that it is handed in by Wednesday at the very latest.
