A Message from the Class Teacher, Dr Mahdavi


2016-17 Term 3 - Curriculum Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

The following information outlines Year 6’s topics for Term 3:


This term we will be looking at shape, focussing on angles. We will move onto problem solving using negative numbers accuracy of drawing, comparing and classifying. We will then work on finding missing angles. We will do problem solving involving all 4 operations before moving back to deepen our understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages and begin this year’s learning about ratio and proportion.


This term, our writing in English will be linked to our Topic Work on Conflict, in particular World War II. The children will be writing chronological and non-chronological reports, diary entries, formal and informal letters, persuasive texts and descriptive narratives inspired by our learning in History, including the Blitz and evacuation.    


Our topic this term is conflict. We will focus on WWII and cover a range of History and Geography objectives. We are also planning an exciting oral history day.  


The children will be having science lessons with Mrs Fidge, between Christmas and Easter the children will learn about Electricity and Light before revising Classification.

Religious Education

This term learning about the key beliefs and practices of the Sikh faith. We will learn about when Sikhism began, who started it, where it originated, as well as finding out about their holy book and place of worship.

Other Subjects

Mr Booker will continue to lead our PE sessions on a Monday. Mrs Willmott will continue our Music sessions on Thursdays.


Maths and English homework will continue to be set weekly on a Friday – please make sure that it is handed in on Wednesday.

2016-17 Term 2 - Curriculum Newsletter

Term one has passed in a flash of class assembly, National Maritime Museum, Bikeability and now we find ourselves on the run up to Christmas! Class 5 & 6 will be visiting the British Museum on Monday 21st November.


We will be working on the correct use of brackets, commas, colons and semi-colons. Our text for this term is “The Kingdom Revealed”.


Key areas of focus will continue to be the development of conceptual understanding alongside procedural fluency and times tables this term. Our tables aim will is to increase speed of recall while maintaining accuracy.  In problem solving activities we will be building resilience to try and work out what maths we are being asked to do and also thinking about a systematic approach to trial and adjust.

We will continue our learning about multiplication and division and then apply this to percentages, fractions and decimals.


We will continue to look at Ancient civilisations and will be visiting the British Museum this month to look at artefacts from the civilisations we are learning about.


This half term class 6 will learn about All Living Things including classification.


This term we are learning about the Bible, how it is comprised and what it means to Christians. We will end our term by learning about the Christmas story.


Our focus in PHSE this term will be Anti-Bullying. Anti-Bullying week happens every November and we have a range of thought-provoking activities planned both during that week and throughout the term.


PE will be taught by Andy Booker on Monday afternoons, we will be encouraging children to take responsibility for remembering their own PE kits in preparation for senior school. We will also be attending the gym on Wednesday afternoons.


Class 6 will be doing art with Mrs Fidge on Thursday afternoons.
